Social Security is a great benefit - IF you receive it. If you have worked for public school systems over your career, some or even most, of those years may have been for systems who did not participate in Social Security. Fayette County Public Schools rejoined Social Security in 2002, but employees at that time had the option to remain outside of Social Security.
Employees who have not always contributed to Social Security (you or your spouse) would likely see reduced benefits when the time comes to retire. To learn more about how this may affect your ultimate benefit from Social Security, you may want to click on the links below or simply contact Social Security directly for specific guidance on your actual benefits.
